Q

how do our eyes see images?

A
  • Waves of light are reflected into the eyes by objects we see
  • Objects absorb some wavelengths and reflect the colour the object appears to be

Q

what is the iris?

A

Coloured ring of circular and radial smooth muscle that regulates light entry (via pupil size)

15
Q

what is the lens?

A

Avascular elastic biconvex disc behind the pupil, separating the anterior and posterior eye
- Bends (refracts) light onto retina (upside down)
- Accommodation: Thickening of lens to focus on near objects

16
Q

what does the anterior eye contain?

A

The aqueous humour:
- Supplies nutrients / waste removal to avascular structures (cornea / lens)

17
Q

what does the posterior eye contain?

A

The vitreous humour
- Holds retina against choroid

18
Q

what is the retina?

A
  • Several layers of specialised cells sit on the choroid and pigmented epithelium (black-out)
  • Light travels through the nerve cells to the photoreceptors
  • Message then sent to occipital lobe of brain (via optic nerve)
19
Q

what are rods for?

A
  • Non-colour vision
  • Night vision (low light levels)
20
Q

what are cones for?

A
  • Colour vision
  • Needs bright light
  • 3 types of cone (in most primates incl Humans) for different wave lengths: blue (short wavelength), green (medium), and red (long)
21
Q

what does binocular vision enable?

A

better perception of depth, distance, height, width

22
Q

what is visual acuity?

A

sharpness of vision

23
Q

ears are the organs of what?

A

hearing and balance

24
Q

what is the function of the outer ear?

A

collects sound waves

25
Q

what is the function of the middle ear?

A

Amplifies and transfers sound waves to inner ear

26
Q

what is the function of the inner ear?

A
  • Converts sound waves to nervous impulses
  • CNVIII (vestibulocochlear nerve)  brain
  • Also contains organs of balance
27
Q

what is the role of the auricle (pinna)?

A

collects sound waves

28
Q

what is the role of the external acoustic meatus (auditory canal)?

A

glands secrete earwax

29
Q

what is the tympanic membrane (eardrum)

A

membrane seperating outer and middle ear

30
Q

what is the anatomy of the middle ear?

A
  • Air filled cavity within temporal bone
  • Contains the ossicles: 3 very small bones: Malleus, incus, stapes (smallest bone)
31
Q

what is the role of the ossicles?

A

amplify signal (~20x)

32
Q

what are the 2 roles of the inner ear?

A
  • Hearing: Cochlea
  • Balance: Vestibule and 3 semicircular canals
33
Q

what is the cochlea?

A

A fluid-filled tube rolled into a spiral.
