EEG Flashcards
Function
To record electricity (voltage difference) in time in different places of cortical areas
Why can we use it only in the brain?
Because of neuron’s structure: inhibitory or activating synaptic potentials is measured
Field potentials
Spatial and temporal average of extracelular currents generated by a group of neurons
When do we perform a sleep EEG?
Epilepsy diagnosis
Sleep staging and quantification
Sleep pathologies
When do we perform a standard EEG?
Conscience level alteration
Paroxystic episodes: spells, seizures
Cognitive function decrease (dementia)
Brain maturity evaluation (newborns)
Death diagnosis
Interpretation
Brain or not brain
Normal or abnormal
Not normal —> what does it mean?
- Distribution
- Location
- Timing, conditions
- Patterns
EEG waves
Can be normal or not depending on the age and condition of the patient
Spike followed by slow wave
Epilepsy
Tryphasic waves
Encephalopathy
