Cerebellum I Flashcards
The cerebellum and the basal ganglia act as
Feed-back system on the motor cortex that ultimately refine the motor output from the cortex
Cerebellum assist the cortex in
Unconscious preparation, coordination of rhythmic patterns, and correct outcome and adaptation of actions
It’s separated from the occipital lobe by
Tentorium
Superiorly, we clearly distinguish an
Ant and post lobe
Ant and post lobe are separated by
Horizontal sulcus or fissure
On the inferior surface, we see mostly the
Post lobe, containing the Tonsils
Ventrally on this inferior surface, the
Flocculonodular lobe
Each lobe can be divided into
Lobules
Inside the cerebellum:
Cortex
Subcortical white matter
Deep cerebellar nuclei (projecting outside cerebellum)
Cerebellar outputs will exit via one of the three
Cerebellar peduncles
Cerebellar nuclei
Fastigial nuclei = most medial
Interposed nuclei = in the middle
Dentate nucleus = largest, most lateral
Vermis
Cord that courses from ant to post and divides the hemispheres
Area bilateral to vermis, which receives different projections than those of vermis and hemispheres
Paravermis or paravermal cortices
The cerebellar cortex is divided into 3 regions
Vermis→ related to Fastigial nuclei
Paravermal regions→ related to Interposed nuclei,
Lat hemispheres, largest areas→ related to Dentate nuclei
