Edward VI: Succession crisis Flashcards
Overview of events
Edward became ill, northumberland feared Mary (Catholic) making England catholic
Attempted to change succession to Lady Jane Grey, little support - more for legitimate mary.
Succession not made legal through parliament
Northumberland’s plan
Northumberland planned to make Lady Jane Grey queen. She had married his son in May 1553, but Edward died in July 1553 before Parliament made the succession legal
Failure of the plan
Edward died too quickly
Lady Jane Grey had a weak claim compared to Mary
Mary managed to amass strong political support in Norfolk. The council made her queen in 2 days
Implications of the devyse
Northumberland failed, was a power-drive to marry into the succession. People saw this as power hunger and were reluctant to support.
Mary was quick to act and gathered large support
Messing with the succession was illegal
