Education - Gender differences Flashcards
Topic 4 - theories and research - education
McRobbie (Study)
McRobbie studied girls magazines - in the 1970s they emphasized the importance of getting married and not being “left on the shelf” and in the 1990s they reinforce images of assertive, independent women
Sue Sharpe (study)
In the 1970s - girls had low aspirations, they believed that education success was unfeminine and being ambitious was unattractive - getting married and having children was the goal for them.
1990s - girls had a different list of priorities with a career being first and becoming independent, rather than dependent on her husband.
Mitsos and Browne
Girls do better at coursework than boys and the feminist movement raised girls standards.
Sewell
Boys fall behind because education has become “feminized” - schools do not nurture masculine traits such as competitive ness instead they nurture traits such as attentiveness.
McRobbie - theory
Bedroom culture - girls are socialized inside the home whereas boys are socialized outside the home - this causes for girls to achieve better in school because they have grown up through this
Swann
Teacher take their time telling off boys rather than teaching them.
