Education and Health in Dev Flashcards
Which theories support education for dev?
functionalists and modernisation theorists
How does good education improve living standards in LEDCs?
- economic dev requires expert knowledge on a local level and can’t be brought in from other countries
- gives people values and attitudes required for dev so they know what action their communities need to take
- it’s a unifying force, gives common values which helps to overcome class, ethnic and religious differences
- people want achieved status - e.g women and the poor can be empowered
Why is universal education unavailable in some countries?
- even if they have the policy, some children may not actually go e.g if their parents need them to work
- parents still have to pay fees and supplies so poor children still don’t go to school
How has the growth in education caused problems in employment?
- while young people are at school they’re not contributing to the economy so less revenue from tax to go back into education
- bright people from rural areas tend to move to cities for jobs which causes over population
- ‘brain drain’ - educated people leave LEDCs for better jobs in different countries so stops dev
Why do dependency theorists view education as cultural imperialism?
- gives people capitalist values
2. tool for keeping people dependent on the dev world - trains them to get jobs that aid TNCs
What is the PQLI?
David Morris - Physical quality of life index - measures health and education - measures IMR, literacy and life expectancy
How does education, poverty and MEDCs impact health in LEDCs?
education: people don’t know how to prevent diseases or basic treatments
poverty: bad diet, poor public health, bad/expensive health care, not enough Drs to people
MEDCs: LEDCs have access to drugs that are unsafe, set the price of life-saving drugs high, western products used wrong e.g dirty water with baby formula, TNCs don’t care about health and safety
