How many kids in education in the 1930s?
Only 20% of kids in any form of education
What was The Butler Act and what did it do and how efficient
Created a Tripartite system, Grammar Schools, secondary modern ,Technical
75% of kids whent to secondary moderns
The effect of the Butler Act was that millions of working class kids had free education and alowed girls education
What was the Crowther report 1959 and what was the Newsom report 1963
It was Commissioned to look into education and more meritocratic.it made a series of recommendations such as
- raising leaving age to 16
- creating county colleges for post-sixteen ed
- improved sixth-form
Newsom:
Recommends
- there should be more reasurch on teaching technology
- improved sex education
- Parliamentary investigation should look into links between poverty and bad education
- more practical subjects for lower ability pupils
What was the Education Act 1976? What did it do?
Labour. The Act retirated the 165 demands for LEAs to make there schools Comprhansives but didn’t force them.
What was the Yellow book and the Ruskin speech?
Yellow book:
Callahan ordered a report into Education
Report called the ‘Yellow Book’ said that progressive education had caused massive harm . It staed that :
- school discipline had declined
- many schools no Educatioing in a way good for jobs
- govt had to little say over education
Ruskin :
Callaghan said that :
- progressive ed had some good points and had done good things when with good teachers but faild when with wrong teachers
- did wish to return to the learning of the 1950s
- there should be national clericulam
- greater scrutiny placed on teachers
What where the Percy and Barlow reports
Percy report recommends
- classical education should be stopped in favour of science and engineering
- universities dramatically expanded to cater for large numbers of students
Barlow said :
That there were too few scientists and engineers
What was the Robbins Committee ?
Said Britain was falling behind other countries
It said Britain must achieve 4 goals
- Unis must make sure the country had a compatant workforce
- unis must make sure there broadly educated
- it has an impact on the culture
What was the Open University
Established in 1964 it ensured that people of any age who had missed out on higher education could become qlafied
