The growth of welfare provision 1918-39
Unemployment Insurance Act 1920:
- national insurance extended from4 million (1919) to 11 million in 1921
- benefits increased
The need was
- high levels of unemployment
- fears of revolution
- popular desire to support the men who fort in the wars
What was the Unemployment Act 1934 ?
The act reversed the 10% cut in benefits for the short term unemployed. They had to reapply after 6 months .created the Unemployment Assistence board . Means testing countinued .. cut in long term benefits.
What was the Family Allowences Act 1945 and National Insurance Act?
Family allowences Act created the child benefits given to mothers.
National Insurance Act 1946:
Unemployment benefits and sickness benefits available to all workers
State pensions
What was the Industry Injuries Act 1946 and the National Assistantance Act 1948
Industrial Injuries Act 1946 extended welfare by giving workers the right to compensation for accidents
National Assistance Act 1948 offered welfare to those who were not covered by national Insurance as they didn’t work. Homeless and disabled people could claim . Abolished the Public Assistence Committies
The National Insurance Act 1970
- gave pensions to 100,000 people those who hadn’t been covered by the 1948 National Assistence Act
- established attendance allowance
