Unemployment Insurance Act 1920:

  • national insurance extended from4 million (1919) to 11 million in 1921
  • benefits increased

The need was

  • high levels of unemployment
  • fears of revolution
  • popular desire to support the men who fort in the wars

What was the Unemployment Act 1934 ?

A

The act reversed the 10% cut in benefits for the short term unemployed. They had to reapply after 6 months .created the Unemployment Assistence board . Means testing countinued .. cut in long term benefits.

A

Industrial Injuries Act 1946 extended welfare by giving workers the right to compensation for accidents

National Assistance Act 1948 offered welfare to those who were not covered by national Insurance as they didn’t work. Homeless and disabled people could claim . Abolished the Public Assistence Committies
