What was and what happened on Black Friday?

A

The miners in 1921 attempted to strike but let down by the Triple Alliance. On Friday 15th of April . The NUR and NTWF both decided not to go on strike . The strike quickly failed and were forced to accept 20% cuts

What happened with the 1926 general strike?

A

Govt inquiry ( Samual Commission) established that there needed to be an end to there subsidies .The Samual Commission recommend a 13.5% cut for the miners .

Govt response: The govt knew the strike was coming.The govt put out propaganda.The Labour Party distanced it’s self.

The combination of the General Strike and Great Depression with mass unemployment weakened the unions. Membership declined from 8 million in 1922 to 4.5 million in 1933

Employment opportunities and work in factories

A

Employment opportunities were increasing. There was an increased white-collar jobs and more technical jobs.By 1956 over 500,000 people were directly employed in car industry.Income doubled from £8.30 per week in 1951 to £15.35 a decade later. Weekly wages rose by 88% between 1955 and 1969.

What was In Place of Strife?

A

Wilson’s govt . Babra Castle 1969. It proposed :

Govt could order a strike ballot

Unofficial strikes could be ordered back to work.

Union disputes go to independent community.with a legaly binding verdict.

Strike that broke the rules could be given fines and could face imprison
