Continuity editing and it’s purpose?
An editing style that aims to present the text to emphasize the real time movement of the narrative, and to create a sense of realism for the viewer by giving the impression of continuous filming.
Action match and its purpose?
A shot that cuts to another continuing a piece of action despite a cut in the shot.
Cross cutting / Parallel editing and its purpose?
Where an editor cuts between two seperate scenes happening in two seperate locations at the same time. Serving to illustrate a contrast or a link between them.
What is a cut and its purpose?
The move of one shot to another. It can draw our attention to things.
Cutaway
a brief shot that cuts into a scene showing a related action, object or person. It can emphasise the audiences into thinking in a particular way about a scene.
Dissolve
When the first shot is on the screen and the second shot starts appearing on the top of it more and more until its clear. Used to link two scenes / people together / show time movement.
What is Ellipsis and its purpose?
Removal / shortening pf elements of a narrative to speed up the action.
What is an eye-line match and its purpose?
a type of editing that maintains the eyeline / level when cutting from a character to what the character sees. Puts the audiences in the positions of the characters.
What is fade and its purpose?
A type of editing where the image gradually fades and disappears, leaving a black/white screen. -suggests passed time or a situation ended.
What is a Graphic Match and its purpose?
A cut from one shot to another that look visually the same (simillar shape, colour etc). There to show us a clear lonk between two scenes. Often this is making a comment on the issue.
What are jump cuts and its purpose?
A cut that moves to a very simillar part of the same scene but missing a piece of action out. Often used to disorientate the viewer, or show how disoriented the character is.
What is a linear narrative and its purpose?
A sequential narrative with a beginning, a middle and an end in order. This is easily accessible to audiences, dominant form in mainstream media representations.
What is a long take and its purpose?
Its a take that is allowed to remain on screen for a long duration before its cut. Used to slow the pace of the scene down, making it calmer and more useful b
What is a Montage and its purpose?
This is a series of shots edited together to show time passing and something happening in that time.
What is a short take and its purpose?
Is a take that is allowed to remain on screen for a short time before the editor cuts to something else. Used to speed actions up, making it more dramatic & exciting.
