What is given to the patient prior to ECT?
General Anaesthesia
Muscle Relaxent
How long is the patient exposed to the electric current?
Dosage is titrated to achieve a seizure which lasts 15-30 seconds.
How is the effect of the seizure monitored?
Via an EEG
What an be used to stop the seizure if it is prolonged?
Benzodiazepines
What are the most likely causes of death during ECT?
Cardiovascular or Pulmonary complications
What type of memory loss are patients usually affected by?
Autobiographical
Ability to learn is not impinged
If the patients ability to consent is impaired what is the procedure?
A second indépendant Dr is required in order to allow procedure to take place.
How often is ECT administered?
2x weekly
