What is ECT?
Electroconvulsive Therapy, use of electrical shock delivered to the brain to induce a seizure that treats depression
During ECT the client is (awake, under local anesthesia, or under general anesthesia)
Under general anesthesia, with a vent
What conditions does ECT treat?
Depression
Complications of ECT (3)
Aspiration of emesis
Dislocation of joints
fractures due to convulsion (rare today)
What class of meds is given with ECT?
Muscle relaxant - succinylcholine
What intellectual ability is impaired after ECT?
Memory
How long will a clients memory be impaired after ECT?
2 to 3 weeks
Immediately after ECT how with the client act?
Drowsy, dull, apathetic
In what position should a client be in immediately after an ECT
On their side to prevent aspiration
What pre-op orders will be ordered before ECT?
NPO after midnight
Remove dentures
Client to void before surgery
Side rails up
