Ecosystems part 2 Flashcards
The gradual and orderly process of change in an ecosystem leading to a climax community.
Ecological Succession
Ecological succession that occurs in an area void of vegitation
Primary Succession
Ecological succession that occurs on preexisting soil after primary succession has been disrupted or destroyed
Secondary Succession
The final stage of succession wherein plant and/or animal populations stay balanced until destroyed.
Climax Community
The first organisms to colonize an ecosystem
Pioneer species
A very small specialized habitat
Microhabitat
Plant life occurring in a particular region
Flora
Animal life living in a particular region
Fauna
Something that limits the growth of an organism or population
Limiting factor
The capacity to endure. In ecology, the word describes how biological systems remain diverse and productive over time
Sustainability
