How did the Costa Rican government help sustain TRF?
In 1979 Costa Rica passed a law which meant they could give tax deductions and grants to owners of rainforest if they conserved their forest area and used it to benefit the society.
Forest landowners are paid.$50 annually for every hectare of forest their protect.
In 1997 the Costa Rica government introduced the Certificate for Sustainable Tourism for businesses that have proved their commitment by sustainable tourism.
What is ecotourism?
Ecotourism encourages visitors to come to a country to leave a small carbon footprint, to the benefit of local communities and environments.
Describe the ecotourism project started up in Costa Rica
In 1983 an ecotourism project called Rara Avis S.A. started, which was to show how important the rainforest is as an economic resource that should be protected.
Owners originallyplanned to cut down about 485 hectares of rainforest and sell the timber, but now it is being managed sustainably.
What are carbon credits?
offset the they carbon emissions that they produce and they do this by selling carbon credits.
In 1999 over US $20 million was generated for the country.
