Changing Landscapes Flashcards
What are the 3 main types of rocks in the UK?
Metamorphic
Igneous
Sedimentary
What is sedimentary rock?
The sedimentary rocks are formed in layers called sediments.
They are formed from weathered or eroded rock debris.
Some sedimentary rock is formed from dead sea
What is igneous rock?
Igneous rock is formed from molten rock, that comes from the earth’s centre.
If the molten rock cools underground, it forms rocks that contain large crystal
What is metamorphic rock?
Metamorphic rock is formed when igneous or sedimentary rocks are put under a lot of pressure or are heated.
Under those conditions the minerals in the rock chemically change to make a metamorphic rock.
Give an example of each kind of rock…
Sedimentary = chalk, sandstone igneous = granite metamorphic = marble, slate
Which rocks are hard and resistant and which are soft
Hard = igneous, metamorphic Soft = sedamentray
What is a physical process?
A natural process
What is a human process?
A man made process
What is weathering?
the breaking down or dissolving of rocks and minerals on Earth’s surface.
What is erosion?
the wearing away of materials by a moving force, such as a river, the sea or ice.
