Ecosystems and Distribution Flashcards
What is a species?
A group of organisms that can interbreed and produce fertile offspring
What is a biodiversity?
The range of different types of species, and the difference’s that exist within each species present in an ecosystem
What is an ecosystem?
Made up of many ecosystems and all the organisms and non-living factors in one particular area
What is a food web?
A diagram to show the interactions of organisms
What do the arrows in a food web show?
The direction of energy flow
What is a habitat?
The place where an organism lives
What is a population?
All the organisms of one species living together
What is a community?
2 or more different species of organisms living together
What is a producer?
An organism that gains energy from making its own food by photosynthesis
What is a consumer?
An organism that gains energy from eating other consumers
What is a herbivore?
An organism that gains energy from eating plants
What is a carnivore?
An organism that gains energy by eating animals
What is an omnivore?
An organisms that gains energy by eating plants and animals
What is a predator?
An organism that hunts organisms to feed on it
What are prey?
The organisms that are hunted and eaten by another organism
What is a biotic factor?
A living factor which affects population
What does biotic factors include?
Competition for resources, disease, food availability, predation and grazing
What is a niche?
The role an organism plays in its environment
What is competition?
When organisms require the same resources
What type of things do plants require and compete for?
Light, water, space and soil nutrients
What type of things do animals require and compete for?
Food, water, shelter and mates
What is competition of individuals of the same species called?
Intra-specific competition
What is competition between different species called?
Inter-specific competition
