Cell Transport Flashcards
UNIT 1
What does a animal cell contain?
Cytoplasm, nucleus, cell membrane, mitochondria, ribosomes
What does a plant cell contain?
Cytoplasm, mitochondria, ribosomes, cell membrane, cell wall, chloroplasts, vacuole, nucleus
What is the function of the cell membrane?
Allows exit/entry of substances in/out of the cell
What is the function of the nucleus?
Controls all cell activity
What is the function of the cytoplasm?
Site of chemical reactions
What is the function of the cell wall?
Gives the cell support and prevents it from bursting
What is the function of the vacuole?
Holds cell sap
What is the function of the chloroplasts?
Site of photosynthesis
What is the function of the mitoconria?
Site of aerobic respiration
What is the function of ribosomes?
Site of protein synthesis
What are plant cells made from?
Cellulose
What is the cell membrane made from?
Phospholipids and proteins
What functions do the proteins in the membrane carry out?
pores, receptors, channels, pumps
Is the cell membrane selectively permeable?
Yes
What can transport of ions or molecules into the cell either be?
Passive or active transport
What is passive transport?
The movement of molecules down a concentration gradient and does not require energy
What are example of passive transport?
Diffusion and Osmosis
What is diffusion?
The movement of molecules down a concentration gradient from a higher concentration to a lower concentration
What is a concentration gradient?
The difference in concentration between regions
What are 2 examples of molecules that enter a cell by diffusion?
Oxygen and glucose
What are 2 examples of molecules that leave a cell by diffusion?
Carbon dioxide and wastes
What is osmosis?
The movement of water molecules from a region of high water concentration to a region of lower water concentration, down a concentration gradient), through a selectively permeable membrane
What does it mean if a plant cell has become plasmolysed?
A plant cell that has lost so much water from its vacuole that the cell membrane has pulled away from the cell wall
What does it mean if a plant cell has become turgid?
The plant cell has gained so much water that the cell has swolen
