Ecosystem Flashcards
Environment
All living and non living things around an organism is its environment.
Adaptation
An adaptation is a structure of behavior that allows a species to survive and reproduce in its environment.
Species
Species have the same general physical characteristics and other adaptations.
Population
Each population contains all the organisms of the same kind of community.
Ecosystem
An area in which living and non living things interact.
Community
Organisms that live together in an ecosystem make up a community.
Niche
The role that each species plays in its community is its niche[ job]
Biotic
Living things in an ecosystem, things that are alive like animals and people.
Abiotic
Non living things in a ecosystem, things that are not alive.
Habitat
A habitat is a animals home where they find food
Biome
Biomes are regions of the world with similar climate animals, and plants.
Tundra
The tundra biome is the coldest biome on earth and it covers 1/5 of the earth.
Deciduous Forest
The deciduous forest has four seasons, and the average temperature is 50 degrees Fahrenheit.
Tropical Rainforest
The tropical rainforest is located close to the equator. And the average temperature is 70 to 85 Fahrenheit.
Grasslands
The weather there varies greatly. It is cold in the winter and hot in the summer. The most important plant s GRASS.
Desert
The desert covers about one fifth of the earth. Deserts are both very hot and very cold with very little rainfall.
Taiga
The taiga is the largest land biome on earth. And it has short, wet summers.
Carnivore.
Animals that only eat meat.
Herbivore
Animals that only eat plants.
Omnivore
Animals that eat both plants and animals.
Producer
Organism that use the Suns energy to make their own food.
Consumer
Are organisms that get energy from eating producers, or other consumers.
Decomposers
Are organism that consume dead plants and animals.
Food Web
A group of inter connecting food chains.
Food Chain
Food chains show how energy is passed from the sun, to the producers, from producers to consumers.
Predator
A predators are animals that hunt other animals for food.
Prey
Prey is the food of the predator.
Energy pyramid
Is a model that uses a pyramid shape to show that the energy available for consumers decreases as it travels through a typical food chain or web.
Tertiary
This level is at the top of the food chain and it feeds on the secondary consumer.
10% rule
When energy is passed through an ecosystem.
Symbiosis
A relationship which two different organisms live in close association with each other.
