Water Patterns Flashcards
Convection current
Gases or liquids that rise and fall in a circular path.
Sea breeze
The warm air rises from the land and the cold air from the sea comes to take its place
Land breeze
The cold air from the ocean sinks and warm air comes o take its place
Coriolis effect
The rotation of the earth cause object in the northern hemisphere deflect to the right while objects in the Southern Hemisphere are deflected tot he left
Jet streams
A band of very fast moving wind caused by differences in temperature.
Trade winds
Winds that blow towards the equator they bring cold air from the poles tot eh tropics.
Doldrums
A spot near the equator where there are very few winds
Prevailing winds
Winds that blow away from the equator.
- Brings warm air from tropics to the poles
Prevailing westerlies
Winds that blow way from the equator.
- they blow from west to east
- The golf stream brings arm air to the poles
Polar easterlies
Winds that are found near the poles.
El Niño
Band of warm ocean temperature that develop off the coast of South America. Warms up climates
Can cause droughts. El Niño = HOT
[ both happen in the west pacific west coast]
La Niña
La Niña band of cold ocean temperatures that develop off the coast of South America
Cools down climates. Can cause more precipitation [ La Niña = COLD]
Gulf Stream
They’ll stream brings warm air to the poles.
[ [ its on the east coast]
