Apprehension Test:
Shoulder aBducted to 90 and elbow flexed to 90, stabilize shoulder and passive external rotation
+ Test = apprehension
Indicates: glenohumeral instability
Empty Can Test:
Pt flex shoulder to 90, aBduct to 45, internally rotate to point thumbs down; phys apply inferior force while pt resists
+ Test = pain or weakness
Indicates: supraspinatus pathology
Drop Arm Test:
Pt aBducts shoulder to 90, then slowly drops UE to neutral
+ Test = uncontrolled arm drop
Indicates: supraspinatus pathology
Painful Arc Test:
Pt aBducts arm starting at neutral
+ Test = pain from 60-120 degrees aBduction
Indicates: subacromial bursa impingement and/or rotator cuff injury
Neer Impingement:
Stabilize shoulder, pronate forearm and PASSIVELY flex shoulder into full flexion
Neer to the Ear
+ Test = pain
Indicates: subacromial bursa impingement and/or rotator cuff injury
Hawkins Test:
Flex shoulder and elbow to 90 degrees, passively internally rotate shoulder
+ Test = pain
Indicates: subacromial bursa impingement and/or rotator cuff injury
Cross Arm Test:
Passively adduct arm across pt chest; monitor posterior aspect of AC joint
+ Test = pain or tissue texture changes in AC joint
Indicates: AC joint pathology

Medial Epicondylitis Test
Flex wrist with extended elbow
Pain = golfer’s elbow
Lateral Epicondylitis Test
Extend wrist with extended elbow
Pain = tennis elbow
