Economy Flashcards
What is ecology?
The study of relationships and interactions of living things with one another and their environment
- What is it called when any population reaches its maximum number based on the ecosystem?
Carrying capacity
What are some globally important environmental issues at this time?
Water and air pollution Dependence on fossil fuels Overpopulation Ozone depletion Tropical Rainforest destruction Global warming
What global environmental factor contributes to the problem of acid rain?
The pollution that results from burning high-sulfur coal to generate electricity creates smoke that eventually drifts to the upper atmosphere. Once there, water vapor condenses on the smoke particles and creates sulfuric acid which falls back to earth as acid rain.
- What is ozone depletion? How does it occur? Why does it occur? What is a result of ozone depletion?
Pollutants originating from refrigerants and spray can propellants containing CFCs have been the major contributors to the depletion of the ozone layer in the upper atmosphere.
Ozone is an important molecule to have in the atmosphere because it helps to shield the Earth from UV light.
Overexposure to UV light can cause skin cancer, cataracts, and damage grain crops like wheat and corn.
What environmental factor is responsible for the rising coastal sea levels?
The raising of global temperature is causing polar ice to melt and that may lead to rising coastal sea levels.
