Q

What global environmental factor contributes to the problem of acid rain?

A

The pollution that results from burning high-sulfur coal to generate electricity creates smoke that eventually drifts to the upper atmosphere. Once there, water vapor condenses on the smoke particles and creates sulfuric acid which falls back to earth as acid rain.

Q
  1. What is ozone depletion? How does it occur? Why does it occur? What is a result of ozone depletion?
A

Pollutants originating from refrigerants and spray can propellants containing CFCs have been the major contributors to the depletion of the ozone layer in the upper atmosphere.
Ozone is an important molecule to have in the atmosphere because it helps to shield the Earth from UV light.
Overexposure to UV light can cause skin cancer, cataracts, and damage grain crops like wheat and corn.
