Q

What is algae?

A
  • Algae are a plant-like protist that are single-celled and contain chlorophyll. They are not considered to be plants because they lack vascular tissue, leaves, roots, and true stems

Q

Nonvascular plants

A
  • Lack a vascular system; they depend on osmosis to transport stuff from one part of the plant to a different one. Size is limited. (etg. Moss)

Q

Vascular Tissue

A
  • Xylem transports water and minerals from the roots to the shoots and leaves
  • Phloem tissue transports the food made during photosynthesis to other parts of plant

Vascular Seedless plants

A
  • Plants that have vascular tissue; reproduce through the use of spores (not seeds). (etg. Ferns)

Q

Reproduction through spores

A
  • A spore is a cell in a seedless plant
  • Each spore is produced by a parent plant
  • Spores are released and carried elsewhere. When it lands (if in a suitable environment), it grows into a tiny plant called a gametophyte

Q

The animal cell and the plant cell

A

The two cells are very similar, BUT the plant cell has chloroplast and a cell wall. The animal cell does not

Q

The Pistil

A
  • The female reproductive part

- Composed of three separate parts: the stigma, the style, and the ovary (which contains the ovules)

A

The male reproductive part

- Composed of two separate parts: the anther (where pollen develops) and the filament

Q

Sexual Reproduction in Flowers

A
  • Pollen develops on the anther
  • The flower is pollinated by bees, bats, hummingbirds etc.
  • When the animal lands, the pollen is transferred from the animal to the stigma of the new flower
  • The pollen grain travels down the style to the ovary where it fertilizes an ovule.
  • The ovule becomes a seed and the ovary becomes fruit

Q

What is a gametophyte?

A
  • A stage in the life cycle of seedless plants in which male and female organs develop and gametes (sex cells) are produced
  • Gametes grow into sporophytes

Q

What is a sporophyte?

A
  • A stage in the life cycle of a seedless plant

- Sporophytes grow and release spores (which become gametophytes)

17
Q

What makes a plant a plant?

A
  • Go through photosynthesis
  • Have a cuticle
o Waxy coating that keeps the plant from drying out
  • Have a cell wall
  • Vascular tissue, roots, stems etc.
18
Q

What is photosynthesis?

A
  • The process by which plants use the energy from sunlight to produce glucose, which they use as food
19

Anatomy of flower and moss

A
