What is nationality?
A group of people with a common cultural heritage.
What is a state?
A political entity with sovereignty over internal and foreign affairs.
What is a nation-state?
An ideal wherein state boundaries match national boundaries. (Ex. Japan, France, Poland, Denmark)
What are some of the world’s major powers?
USA, Russia, China, Japan.
What are some causes of shifting borders?
War, natural resources, expansion, national conflicts, etc.
What is the balance of power between sovereign countries?
If one country becomes too powerful, the other countries can band together against it to prevent it from becoming too powerful.
What are the United Nations?
A group of 51 countries formed in 1945 after WWII, dedicated to keeping international peace and security. Promotes social progress, better living standards and human rights.
Most large countries have what?
Several different levels of government.
What is the unitary system?
Gives all key powers to the national or central government.
What is the federal system?
Divides the powers of government between the national and state/provincial governments.
What is a confederation?
A loose union of independent territories.
Governments can be greatly influenced by what?
Democracy.
What is a natural boundary?
Follows physical geographic features.
What are cultural boundaries?
Boundaries developed between areas with cultural differences such as places with different religions or languages.
What are geometric boundaries?
Usually follows straight lines and do not account for natural and cultural features.
What is nationalism?
The belief that one’s country is superior.
Citizenship practices, public policy and decision making are frequently influenced by what?
Cultural beliefs.
