Ecology Unit test review (Biology) Flashcards
What is ecology?
The study of living things and how they interact with their environment
What are abiotic factors?
Not living (physical) factors of an environment (temperature, light, water)
What are biotic factors?
Living factors of an environment (plants, animals, bacteria)
Define Biosphere
Any part of the Earth that life exists
Define Biome
Group of ecosystems with the same climate
Define ecosystem
Collection of all the organisms living in a particular place, together with their nonliving environment
Define Community
different populations living together in a defined area
Define Population
group of individuals of the same species that live in the same area
Define Species
group of similar organisms that can breed and produce fertile offspring
What is a habitat?
natural home/environment of a plant, animal, or organism
What is a niche?
Range of physical and biological conditions that an organism lives by and can use those conditions
Describe autotroph
organism that can capture energy from sunlight or chemicals to produce its own food (producer)
Describe heterotroph
organism that obtains energy from the foods it consumes (consumer)
Describe decomposer
organism that breaks down dead organic matter and obtains energy
Define Biodiversity
The sum total of the variety of organisms in the biosphere
