Ecology - Part 1 (Definitions) Flashcards
Ecology
study of the interactions between living organisms and their environment
Biosphere
Region of the earth where living organisms are found
Ecosystem
Group of living organisms and the environment they share
Community
Group of living organisms of different species living in the same environment
Population
Number of organisms of a particular species living in an area
Habitat
Place where an organism lives (and to which it is adapted)
Abiotic factors
Non living factors that affect living organisms in an ecosystem
Examples: Temperature, humidity, Light intensity
Biotic factors
Living organisms and how they affect other living organisms in an ecosystem
Examples: Competition, Parasitism, Predation
Edaphic factors
soil conditions and how it effects living orgainisms
Producer
(Autotroph) organism that makes its own food
Example: Oak tree
Consumer
Heterotroph organism that eats other living organisms to obtain food
Example: Badger
Detrivore
(Detritus) Organism that eats dead organic matter
Example: Earth worm
Decomposer
Organism that breaks down dead matter releasing minerals back into the atmosphere
Examples: Bacteria and fungi
Food chain
A list of organisms where each organism consumes the organism before it in the chain
Example: Oak tree —> Aphid —> Ladybird —> Thrush
Trophic level
Organisms position in a food chain
