Ecology Flashcards
Ecosystem
the integrated study of biotic and abiotic components of ecosystems and their interactions within an ecosystem
Biotic Factor
biotic factors are the other, living parts of the ecosystem with which an organism must interact.
Abiotic Factor
Abiotic factors are chemical and physical factors such as temperature, soil composition, and climate, along with the amount of sunlight
Organism
An individual living thing that can react to stimuli, reproduce, grow, and maintain homeostasis. It can be a virus, bacterium, protist, fungus, plant or an animal.
Species
species is a set of organisms adapted to a particular set of resources, called a niche, in the environment
Population
A group of organisms of one species that interbreed and live in the same place at the same time
Community
bound together by the network of influences that species have on one another.
Habitat
an ecological or environmental area that is inhabited by a particular species of animal, plant, or other type of organism
Natural selection
The process in nature by which, according to Darwin’s theory of evolution, only the organisms best adapted to their environment tend to survive and transmit their genetic characters in increasing numbers to succeeding generations while those less adapted tend to be eliminated
Evolution
change in the heritable characteristics of biological populations over successive generations
Producers
are organisms that can make their own energy through biochemical processes, which are just processes in living things that involve chemical reactions.
Consumers
feed on things
Primary consumers
feed on green plants and detritivores that feed on decaying matter are called primary consumers
Secondary Consumer
Carnivores that feed on herbivores or detritivores are called secondary consumers
Tertiary consumer
a carnivore at the topmost level in a food chain that feeds on other carnivores; an animal that feeds only on secondary consumers
