Arthropods Flashcards
Arthropod
an insect, spider, or crustacean
Molting
shed old feathers, hair, or skin, or an old shell, to make way for a new growth
Pheromones
a chemical substance produced and released into the environment by an animal, especially a mammal or an insect, affecting the behavior or physiology of others of its species.
Thorax
the middle section of the body of an insect, between the head and the abdomen, bearing the legs and wings.
Abdomen
the posterior part of the body of an arthropod, especially the segments of an insect’s body behind the thorax.
Cephalothorax
the fused head and thorax of spiders and other chelicerate arthropods.
Exoskeleton
a rigid external covering for the body in some invertebrate animals, especially arthropods, providing both support and protection.
Cheliped
one of the pair of legs that bears the large chelae in decapod crustaceans
Malpighean tubes
a tubular excretory organ, numbers of which open into the gut in insects and some other arthropods.
Arachnid
spider or scorpion
Spiders
an eight-legged predatory arachnid with an unsegmented body consisting of a fused head and thorax and a rounded abdomen
Metamorphosis
the process of transformation from an immature form to an adult form in two or more distinct stages
Crustaceans
an arthropod of the large, mainly aquatic group Crustacea, such as a crab, lobster, shrimp, or barnacle.
Insects
a small arthropod animal that has six legs and generally one or two pairs of wings
Antennae
either of a pair of long, thin sensory appendages on the heads of insects, crustaceans, and some other arthropods
Scorpions
arachnid with lobsterlike pincers and a poisonous sting at the end of its jointed tail, which it can hold curved over the back
Swimmerets
a forked swimming limb of a crustacean
Green Glands
have an excretory function and open at the bases of the larger antennae
Woodtick
any of several ixodid ticks
Grasshopper
a plant-eating insect with long hind legs that are used for jumping and for producing a chirping sound
Butterfly
an insect with two pairs of large wings that are covered with tiny scales
Housefly
a common small fly occurring worldwide in and around human habitation.
Mosquito
long-legged fly with aquatic larvae. The bite of the bloodsucking female can transmit a number of serious diseases including malaria and encephalitis
Crab
crustacean with a broad carapace, stalked eyes, and five pairs of legs, the first pair of which are modified as pincers
Lobster
a large marine crustacean with a cylindrical body, stalked eyes, and the first of its five pairs of limbs modified as pincers.
