Operational control (OPCON)
Authority to organize and employ commands and forces, assign tasks, designate objectives, and give authoritative direction necessary to accomplish the mission
Tactical control (TACON)
Authority limited to the detailed direction and control of movements or maneuvers within the operational area necessary to accomplish missions or tasks assigned. Inherent in OPCON.
* Admin, sustainment, and Class I still remains the responsibility of parent unit
What does it mean when a unit is organic?
Assigned to and forming an essential part of a military organization as listed in its table of organization
What does it mean to be assigned?
Placed in an organization which will control and administer the unit’s primary function (relatively permanent)
What does it mean to be attached?
Placed in an organization for the duration of a specific operation (relatively temporary)
Direct support
- Requires a force to support another specific force and authorizes it to answer directly to the supported force’s request for assistance.
- Units assigned a direct support relationship retain command relationship with the parent unit but are positioned by and have priorities of support established by the supported unit.
- Ex. an FA company supporting an IBCT
General Support
Support given to the supported force as a whole. It is not given to any subdivision of the force. Units assigned a general support relationship are positioned and have priorities established by their parent unit
* an MCAS provides general support for any unit in the area while the BSMC provides direct support to a specific brigade
Reinforcing
Requires a force to support another supporting unit. Only like units can be given a reinforcing mission. A unit assigned a reinforcing support relationship retains its command relationship with its parent unit but is positioned by the reinforced unit with priorities of support established by the reinforced unit, then the parent unit
* Ex. an FA BN gets tasked with reinforcing another FA BN. a BSMC is overwhelmed and an MCAS is tasked with reinforcing it
General support-reinforcing
Support given to the supported force as a while. It is not given to any particular subdivision of the force.
A unit assigned a general support-reinforcing support relationship is positioned and has its priorities established by its parent unit and secondly by the reinforced unit
Ex. BSMC is overwhelmed and the MCAS still continues their treatment while supporting the BSMC

Surgical Augmentation Detachment (SAD) - know the mission
- Personnel: CPT, SFC
- Assigned to the Headquarters & Headquarters Detachment (HHD), Hospital Center
- Augments the capabilities of the Field Hospital (32-BED), with 1 OR (2 OR Tables) for 36 OR hours in a 24-hour period, with thoracic, urology, oral maxillofacial surgical capabilities, 24 additional Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds, outpatient services, and microbiology
Medical Augmentation Detachment (MAD)
- Personnel: CPT, SFC
- Assignment: to the HHD Hospital Center
- Mission: Augments the Field Hospital (32-bed) with operational dental care, one additional ICU ward, one Intermediate Care Ward (ICW), additional microbiology capabilities, and outpatient services for all classes of patients within the Theater
Intermediate Care Ward (ICW) Augmentation
- Assigned to HHD, Hospital Center
- Personnel: CPT, SSG
- Mission: Augments hospitalization with up to 60 patients consisting of three (3) wards providing ICW nursing for up to 20 patients whose conditions require observation for real or potential life-threatening disease/injury
Forward Resuscitative and Surgical Detachment (FRSD)
- Assigned to a MEDBDE (SPT) and attached to an HHD, Hospital Center or Field Hospital (32 Bed) and may be further attached forward to a Role 2 Medical Company
- Personnel: LTC, SFC + 20 (13x officers, 7x enlisted)
- Mission: To provide forward damage control resuscitation (DCR) and damage control surgery (DCS) in support of unified land operations, either independently, or as part of a future unified action partner coalition, for short and extended military health service support (HSS) operations
