ECGs Flashcards
What is an ECG?
an electrocardiogram which checks the hearts electrical activity
Why is correct lead placement important?
To ensure the rhythm shown is correct
When would an ECG be indicated?
A cardiovascular issue
Possibly even a respiratory or DVT
How do you calculate the rate using an ECG rhythm strip?
300 divided by the number of large squares between 2 waves
What is a normal heart rate?
60-100
What is a slow heart rate?
bradycardia - under 60
What is a fast heart rate?
tachycardia - over 100
In terms of limb leads placement, what colour goes on each limb?
Left-arm - yellow
Right arm - red
Left leg - green
Right leg - black
During chest lead placement where does the V1 lead go?
4th intercostal space to the right of the sternum
During chest lead placement where does the V2 lead go?
4th intercostal space to the left of the sternum
During chest lead placement where does the third lead go?
Directly between V2 and V4
During chest lead placement where does the fourth lead go?
5th intercostal space at midclavicular line
During chest lead placement where does the fifth lead go?
5th intercostal space at left anterior axillary line
During chest lead placement where does the sixth lead go?
5th intercostal space at left midaxillary line
When would an ECG be contraindicated?
If the presenting complaint shows no relevancy to the heart
No consent given
