Q

Tricks to remember certain drinks

A

Lowballs, Spirit+modifiers, Daisies etc … are often made by 60 mL of alcohols combined, while the highballs are normally made by 40mL ( except Long Island; Tom Collins, Lynchburg lemonade Which are not build like normal highballs but shake and julep strained ). 2-Spirits cocktails are instead commonly composed by 80mL if it’s a stronger second alcohol like vermouth instead of a milder liqueur

The “Russians” are normally made with vodka

Coupe and martini glasses will never go with slices or wedges, always zests

Cocktails containing fruits juices will normally be shaken

Fine strainer can be optional if the drink is on the rocks but is mandatory if is in a Coupe/Martini glass

Daisy and Sour category differences. The name margarita refers to the flower because the margarita is inspired by an old cocktail named marguerite probably after the color of that original drink. the margarita cocktail became world famous, therefore is THE daisy cocktail and normally calls for an extra liquor in addition to the base spirit, otherwise it would be a “sour” and not a “daisy” which instead has a main strong spirit and half its quantity in a sour part which in its turn is then also counterbalanced by sweetness in half it’s quantity or intensity to create a sweet & sour effect. Daisy are a tiny bit more gentle, like a daisy makes you think, so there’s a more gentle alcohol in addition to the main spirit.

Q

Cosmopolitan

A

Glass: Chilled Martini / Coupe
Ice: None
Method: Shake & fine Strain

Ingredients and quantities in mL:
Citron Vodka 40
Triple sec 20
Lime Juice 10
Cranberry juice 30

Garnish:
Orange Zest

Tricks to remember:
Very Trendy Chic Ladies ( V T C L )
(Acronym for Vodka; Triple sec; Cranberry; Lime)
As it’s a sophisticated chic drink, even if it’s served in a martini glass, the vodka is made more subtle by extra cranberry, you use almost as much as vodka. The orange zest recalls the triple sec, as there’s already enough tanginess with cranberry and lime in the ingredients, no extra lime is required.

13
Q

Daiquiri

A

Glass: Chilled Martini / Coupe
Ice: None
Method: Shake & fine strain

Ingredients and quantities in mL:
Light Rum 60
Lime Juice 30
Sugar syrup 15

Garnish:
None

Tricks to remember:
Daiquiri is a sour and not a daisy like a margarita. Rum makes you think at pirates, pirates had few elements to work with on the boat, therefore sours were pretty common among them and needed alcohol for the fun, sugar for the bad taste of low quality alcohol and vitamin C for the scurvy. Sour has an easy to remember pattern: Spirit; half of spirit in citrus and half of citrus in sugar

14
Q

French Martini

A

Glass: Chilled Martini / Coupe
Ice: None
Method: Shake & fine strain

Ingredients and quantities in mL:
Vodka 40
Chambord 20
Pineapple 40

Garnish:
1 Raspberry

Tricks to remember:
Has martini in its name so it’s a martini category, ( traditionally calls for Spirit; Liquor/Fortified ). In this case the french liqueur Chambord gives their nationality mark, Pineapple makes a fancy visual foam. If the martini is a hard drink in it’s original strong version, french people made it their more typical way in a more fancy, subtle, visual and feminine approach.
The raspberry as garnish calls for the ingredients of Chambord

15
Q

Lynchburg Lemonade

A

Glass: Highball
Ice: Cubes
Method: Shake & Strain

Ingredients and quantities in mL:
Jack daniel’s 40
Triple Sec 20
Fresh Lemon Juice 20
Sugar syrup 10
Sprite/Lemonade Fill
Garnish:
Lemon Wedge

Tricks to remember:
Lynchburg is the hometown of Jack’s Daniel’s in Tennessee so of course it uses Jack’s. It’s technically a daisy… but like usual Americans dilute everything with a soda, so this occasion is not exception and the used Sprite/Lemonade

16
Q

Horse’s Neck

A

Glass: Highball
Ice: Cubes
Method: Build

Ingredients and quantities in mL:
Angostura 2 dashes
Bourbon 40
Ginger ale fill

Garnish:
Lemon spiral

Tricks to remember:
The horse makes me think at cowboys, so bourbon makes more sense rather than other spirits. The name refers to the lemon spiral which looks like a horse’s neck.

17
Q

Tom Collins

A

Glass: Highball
Ice: Cubes
Method: Shake & Strain

Ingredients and quantities in mL:
Gin 60
Lemon 30
Sugar Syrup 15
Soda Top

Garnish:
Lemon Wedge

Tricks to remember:
Tom Collins is a Gin sour with soda. It also gave the name to the Collins glass which is tall and would look empty if you don’t top up with soda. Shaking adds more dilution than simply build in the glass, so there’s no need to fill with a lot of soda, a little top is enough.

18
Q

Long Island Ice Tea

A

Glass: Highball
Ice: Cubes
Method: Shake & strain

Ingredients and quantities in mL:
Vodka 20
gin 20
Light rum 20
tequila 20
triple sec 20
Fresh lemon juice 20
Sugar syrup 10
Coca Cola Top

Garnish:
Lemon wedge

Trick to remember:
It uses all white spirits + Triple sec from common speed racks. In order to look like tea you top it up with cola. Cola normally goes with lemon so you use both lemon juice and lemon wedge as garnish

19
Q

Dry Martini

A

Glass: Chilled Martini / Coupe
Ice: None
Method: Stir & Julep strain

Ingredients and quantities in mL:
Dry Vermouth 1 barspoon
Gin or Vodka 60

Garnish:
Olive or Lemon zest

20
Q

Manhattan

A

Glass: Chilled Martini / Coupe
Ice: None
Method: Stir & Julep strain

Ingredients and quantities in mL:
Angostura 2 dashes
Bourbon 60
Sweet Vermouth 20

Garnish:
1 Cherry

Trick to remember:
As a 2 spirits cocktail is common that it has 80 mL of alcohol unlike the “spirit+modifiers” or the “sours” and “Daisies”
Unlike classic dry martini which is a “spirit+modifier” Rob Roy is in the “2 spirits cocktails” sub-family in the family of martini. Normally a drier secondary drink would be a modifier while a sweeter one would be a more characterising second spirit.

21
