Q

What is the difference between NSP and AOAC fibre and what are the recommendations based on?

A

The recommendations are based on AOAC fibre and are 30g/day
NSP fibre stands for Non-starch polysaccharides fibre and only includes polysaccharides of the plant cell wall characteristic of plant foods such as wholegrain cereals, fruits and vegetables. AOAC fibres includes the total amount of non-digestible polysaccharides and includes for example lignin and resistant starches. In effect, AOAC fibre includes NSP fibre as well as non-digestible carbohydrates.
