inability or refusal to maintain a minimally normal weight
- BMI of less than 18
- denial of current low body weight
- amenorrhea in postmenarchal females of at least 3 cycles
what are the two subtypes of anorexia?
- restricting- limiting food( extreme)
2. binge eating/purging- these patients will be underweight ( how you distinguish this from bulimia)

what are some views that anorexics have about themselves and their “diet”?
weight loss is a way to hapiness, sefl esteem based on weight, health is not a concern, becoming thin is the only concern
what heart problems can anorexia lead to?
SVT, ventricular dysrythmias, long QT syndrome
what else can anorexia lead to?
hypokalmeia and hypochloremic alkylosis with vomitting ( if purging)
what are some HIGH YIELD things to look for on his test to Dx anorexia
dental enamal erosion, ENLARGED PAROTID GLANDS ( due to vomitting)
which subtype has less chance of recovery?
restricting type
what is mortality from anorexia due to?
more often suicide, can be complications of starvation
what are some physical findings in anorexics?
odd eating habits ( combingin wierd foods), tired, irritable, socially withdrawn, depresed
what is the First thing you you need to do in the treatment of anorexia?
replace electrolytes, SLOW tube feeding

what medical treatment ( pill) can you give to anorexics?
fluoxetine ( KNWO THIS)
can also do cognitive behavioral therapy
are most bulemics underweight?
NO, they are normal weight or slightly overweight
what is the definition of bulemia?
recurrent inappropriate compensatory behavior used to prevent weight gain, at least 2 times a week for 3 months
what are the two types of bulemia?
purging- if they use self induced vomitting, laxatives, diuretics, or enemas
Non prging- if they fast, exercise excessively , withouth the above
