Eating disorder
A persistent disturbance in eating behaviour or other behaviours that alter food consumption or absorption and impair physical and psychological functioning
-when emotional aspects of food overpower the role of nourishment
Anorexia nervosa
An eating disorder characterized by extreme restriction of energy intake, leading to a very low body weight, extreme fear of weight gain, and disturbance in the way that body weight is experienced
Bulimia nervosa
An eating disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of binge eating following by inappropriate compensatory behaviours in order to prevent weight gain, such as purging behaviour like self-induced confiding or misuse of laxatives, diuretics or enemas. Fasting or excessive exercise can also be observed
Binge eating
Eating excessive amounts of food in a short time, often with a sense of loss of control and feelings of embarrassment, self-disgust, depression or guilt
Binge-eating disorder
An eating disorder characterized by the same binge eating observed in bulimia nervosa but there is no purging
Other specified feeding or eating disorder or unspecified feeding or eating disorder
An eating disorder that is similar to a fully characterized disorder, but does not include all the listed characteristics
Ex: all characteristics of anorexia except person has normal body weight
Anorexia athletica
Enacting in compulsive exercise to lose weight or maintain a very low body weight
Bigorexia
Obsession with being small and underdeveloped. Believe their muscles are inadequate even when they have a good muscle mass
Body dimorphic disorder
An obsession with a perceived defect in the persons body or appearance
Insulin misuse
Withholding insulin to cause weight loss or prevent weight gain
Orthorexia nervosa
Obsession with eating food considered to be healthy or beneficial. Focus on quality and not quantity
Rumination syndrome
Eating, swallowing and then regurgitating food back into the mouth where it is chews and swelled again
Pica
Eating disorder common during pregnancy where people eat clay, laundry starch and paint chips
Female athlete triad
Combination of disordered eating, amenorrhea, and osteoporosis that occurs in some female athletes particularly those involved in sports in which low body weight and appearance are important

Amenorrhea
Delayed onset of menstruation or the absence of menstruation of 3 or more consecutive cycles
Osteoporosis
Bone disorder characterized by a decrease in bone mass, an increase in bone fragility, and an increase risk of fractures
