Strategies for engaging with people who hear voices?
- work harding to keep them focused - voices are distracting
- gain their trust to talk about the voices
- ask about the voices with genuine interest and curiosity
- support people with understanding
What is a eating disorder?
= a serious mental illness characterised by extreme concerns about weight, shape, eating and or body image
• These concerns lead to disorder and unhealthy patterns of behaviour, including restricting food intake, fasting, counting calories, vomiting, misuse of laxatives and excessive exercise
• These behaviours can greatly affect a persons physical, psychological and social functioning
What are the 5 common eating disorders?
Bulimia nervosa Anorexia nervosa OSFED Binge eating disorder Avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder
What is Bulimia nervosa?
o characterised by recurrent episodes of binge eating followed by compensatory behaviours.
o Compensatory behaviours
o ways to control weight or shape - including vomiting, misuse laxatives or diuretics, fasting, excessive exercise, medications
o Important to consider that a healthy weight does not always mean someone doesn’t have an eating disorder
What is Anorexia nervosa?
o characterised by persistent restricted intake leading to significantly low body weight
o Will have distorted body image body dysmorphia
o Two subtypes of Anorexia Nervosa
Restricting subtype
Binge / purge subtype
What is OSFED?
o Individuals who do not meet the full diagnostic criteria for all the other eating disorders but still have a significant eating disorder.
Binge eating disorder?
o Regular episodes of binge eating. Unlike Bulimia Nervosa, someone with Binge eating will not engage in compensatory behaviours (such as vomiting, laxatives, restriction).
What is avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder?
o Described a disorder where an individual struggles to obtain adequate nutrition, in the absence of the fear of weight gain and or preoccupation with weight and shape that characterises AN, BN or OSFED
Nursing strategies for eating disorders?
Medical stabilisation
- improve nutrition, medications, medical monitoring
Identifying and treating the mental health
Management of ED behaviours
- reduce behaviours
Psycho education (patient and family)
- discharge planning
- referrals
- home with community support
What is the dug health aim?
Drug health aim supports individuals, their families and the community to improve health and minimise harms from the use of drugs and alcohol
How do drugs overlap with mental health?
- People with mental health disorders can use drugs and alcohol as a coping mechanism to remove the feeling or the pain leading to an increased use
