- Last 3 months, HAS engaged in recurrent episodes of binge eating or purging behavior
- Difference between purging and bulimia is LOW BODY WEIGHT in anorexia nervosa

What is Re-Feeding Syndrome in Anorexia Nervosa?
- Re-feedings results in a shift from FAT METABOLISM to GLUCOSE METABOLISM
- The rapid glucose metabolism will increase insulin & uptake of K, Mg.
- Resulting in Hypokalemia, Water Retention, Edema
- Causing MULTIPLE ORGAN FAILURE
What are some of the treatments for Anorexia Nervosa?
- Concern: Re-feeding Syndrome
- Correct: Electrolyte, Decrease Fluids, Vitamins…
- Increase: Increase CALORIES slowly
- Therapy: Cognitive Behavioral [Best Outsomes] or Psychotherapy
- Pharmacotherapy: No drug [Bupropion is CONTRAINDICATED]
How does the DSM-5 describe Binge Eating Disorders?
- Eating in discrete periods of time an amount of food that is larger than what most people would eat
- NOT associated with the recurrent use of inappropriate compensatory behavior
What are some of the common severity specifiers for Binge Eating Disorders and Bulimia Nervosa?
- Mild: 1-3 episodes/week
- Moderate: 4-7 episodes/week
- Severe: 8-13 episodes/week
- Extreme: >14 episodes/week

- Similar to Obesity
- HTN, Elevated Cholesterol, Cardiovascular Disease, Type 2 Diabetes, Gallbladder Disease
