earths atmosphere Flashcards
atmosphere
the envelope of gasses that surrounds our planet, is crucial to life on earth.
firmament
great expanse between the waters above and the waters below on day 2 of creation
Karl Scheele, Joseph Priestly, and Antoine Lavoisier
discovered oxygen, also among the first to isolate the gas using various chemical technics.
Daniel Rutherford
isolated a sample of air that had all of the flammable air, (oxygen) removed.
Homeosphere
closest to earth, where gasses mix together, contains 3 different sections.
heterosphere
above the homeoshpere, air composition changes.
troposphere
lowest layer of the atmosphere in the homeosphere. Where the earths weather happens.
stratosphere
next level in the homeosphere,
mesosphere
last layer in the homeosphere,
thermosphere
the uppermost temperature layer of the atmosphere wich extends to the thermopause.
exosphere
the transitional zone, not a true layer,- beetween the atmosphere and interplanetary space.
Ionosphere
where ions are made, this layer contains up to 4 layers that combine and changes between day and night and with the seasons.
magnetosphere
magnetic field that interacts with the iron core of the earth. Protects us from solar winds.
James Van Allen
discovered the magnetosphere in 1958 using information gathered by america’s first artificial satellite explorer 1.
solar constant
rate of the flow of radiant energy from the sun through space to reach earth
convection
heat transfer by the upward movement of warmer les dence fluid as it is displaced by a older more dence fluid.
conduction
heat transfer y direct between 2 substances
radiation
visible light heats earth’s surface then heat that is re emitted as infered or thermal radiation.
