What is the difference in Conductive and Sensosrineural hearing loss?
Conductive means sound waves are blocked before they get to middle ear. Sensosrineural is an alteration in the 8th cranial nerve or cochlear damage
Name a common ototoxic antibiotic?
Gentamicin
Causes of conductive hearing loss?
Ototoxic medications, history of middle ear infections, obstruction in middle ear(ear wax), abnormal tympanic membrane
You should check the hearing for a pt on ototoxic medications if they take it for how many days?
5 days or more
What is Meniere’s syndrome?
An excess of endolymphatic fluid
Meniere’s syndrome causes?
vertigo, tinnitus, one-sided hearing loss
Nutrition do’s and don’ts for Meniere’s syndrome?
Avoid high salt content, Adequate amounts of fluids, avoid caffeine, limit alcohol, avoid MSG
A pt that speaks loudly and has poor hearing in noisy environments has what type of hearing loss?
Sensorineural
A pt that speaks softly and has better hearing in noisy environments has what type of hearing loss?
Conductive
