Shays Rebellion
farmers rebellion due to loss of land because of high taxes and limited currency on farmers behalf
3/5 compromise
an agreement to count three out of every five enslaved people toward a state’s total population. Southern states wanted more population. northern states found it unfair.
New jersey plan
A plan that benefited smaller states. Unicameral legislature with equal representation.
Checks and balances/ key powers
government gives each branch of government the power to limit the actions of the other branches. Executive: enforces laws, Legislative: makes laws, Judicial: interprets laws (violate or no)

Led by Hamilton, supported federal gov and a loose interpretation of the constitution, feared common man

leader of Federalists, served as the first U.S. secretary of the treasury, and helped solve the whiskey rebellion.

John Adams ran against Thomas Jefferson. PEACEFULL transferred between parties with different ideas and beliefs. showed the world we could withstand a democracy.
war of 1812
fought between the United States and Great Britain, over the impressment of American sailors by the British Navy and warhawks encouragement. Helped establish some nationalism. Proved our nation is strong to other countries.
embargo act
an act that prohibited american merchants from trading with foreign countries as a reaction to British violence at sea
american system
the policy of promoting industry in the U.S. by adoption of transportation systems (roads..etc), protective tariffs, bringing back the National Bank, and Nationalism
industrial revolution
transformed economies that had been based on agriculture and handicrafts into economies based on large-scale industry, mechanized manufacturing, and the factory system. TEXTILES WERE THE FIRST PRODUCT.
whiskey rebellion
violent tax protest during the presidency of George Washington. whiskey tax was the first tax on a domestic product by the federal government. Serious challenge of Washington’s presidency.
constitutional convention
a meeting of delegates from the states that took place in Philadelphia in 1787 to create a new constitution for the United States
virginia plan
wanted bicameral legislature based on population
great compromise
provided for a bicameral legislature, with representation in the House of Representatives according to population and in the Senate by equal numbers for each state.

Gives stability. has govt money collected by taxes. Gives money to state bank to loan to customers.
alien and sedition acts
gave the govt the power to jail and deport unwanted citizens (harmed the dem-reps due to lowering the numbers of dem-reps). Resulted in the Virginia and Kentucky resolutions.
Marbury v madison
established judicial review. American courts have the power to strike down laws and statutes they find to violate the Constitution

The Louisiana Purchase extended United States across the Mississippi River
