compromise of 1850
based on the line of 1820 california needed to divide, but people didnt want to. This causes them to get rid of the line. This results in a compromise allowing western territorys popular sovreignty for decding to be a slave states.
bleeding kansas
a period of violent conflict in Kansas Territory from 1854 to 1861 between pro-slavery and anti-slavery groups. The violence was a result of the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854, which gave settlers in Kansas the right to vote on whether the territory would be admitted to the Union as a free or slave state. This concept was known as popular sovereignty

John Brown was a prominent leader in the American abolitionist movement preceding the war. he was funded by the “Secret Six” (radical abolitionists). led the raid on Harper’s Ferry
