Precommunicative Stage
Learning to spell.
Pretend to write and use pictures
Know the alphabet in some form.
Be able to recognize letters in their name.
SEMIPHONETIC STAGE
Sounds are assigned to letters.
Letters represent a sound in speech, and when put together, a word can be formed.
Phonetic Stage
Connection between speech and spelling.

Transtional Stage of Spelling Development
Become aware of the conventional rules of spelling. Not “ Inventive spelling.”
Corrective Stage
The speller knows the orthographic system and its basic rules.
Reading Comprehension Must Haves:
If a student does not have strong word recognition and language comprehension skills, they won’t be proficient in reading comprehension.
