What is Ectopic Pregnancy?
-Pregnancy located outside of the uterine cavity.
Risk factors of ectopic pregnancy:
-History of previous ectopic pregnancy
-IUCD
Having IUCD with a positive pregnancy test increases the risk of ectopic
-Sterilisation failure
Fallopian tubes interrupted
-PID
esp by chlamydia
-Smoking
affects the cilia of the fallopian tube
-Previous pelvic surgery
Complicated c/s
Appendicectomy
Most common place to find ectopic
- Ampular of the fallopian tube (93%)
- Isthmus of the tube
-Conrnual
junction at the myometrium and fallopian tube
-Ovarian
Not common
- Cervical
- C/S Scar Ectopic
-Abdominal
least common
What is the clinical presentation of ectopic?
-Pain
Localised -unruptured ectopic
Generalised - ruptured, acute abdomen or peritonism
, will give rise to GIT irritability (nausea, vomitting and diarrhoea)
-PV bleeding
Usually spotting
- Positive preg test
- Haemorrhagic shock if excessive loss of blood
