What is colposcopy?
A
Colpo means vagina.
-Colpo-scopy means to visualise the cervix under magnification, using ascetic acid.
Colposcopy can be a diagnostic or therapeutic procedure.

What is looked for in a diagnostic colposcopy?
A
- Is there squamous intrepithelial lesion (SIL) ?
- What is the extent of the lesion?
- Is there any microinvasion?

What does therapeutic colposcopy criteria entail?
A
PEMEC
P: parity -Is there parity between the different results? Cytology Colposcopy Biopsy
E: extent
-Can you completely visualise the abnormal area?
M: microinvasion
-No microinvasion must be present
E: endocervix
- endocervical canal needs to be normal
- there should be no AGC on PAP Smear
C: Colposcopy
-Must be available

What is the therapy used during colposcopy?
A

Large Loop Excision of the Transformation Zone
- Ensure complete excision of TZ
- Take about 7-10 mm tissue
- Pt needs to be followed up, 6 monthly in the first year and then yearly for atleast 5 to up to 10 years.

Cone biopsy can be done

- needs to be done in theatre preferrably , 2.5 cm tissue taken out
- its a diagnostic procedure, helps to decide if the pt needs hysterectomy
