Importance of the Louisiana Purchase

Lewis and Clark Expedition
- Jefferson wants to find a water route to the Pacific Ocean.
- He also wants to find what resources might be out there
Impressment (War of 1812)
- The British were supplying Native Americans with weapons to fight American settlers
- The British were practicing impressment. They were seizing Americans on ships and “impressing” them into the British navy
Consequences of the War of 1812
- The Federalists party is eliminated.
- Some British products are no longer available, so America is encouraged to industrialize.
- This war solidifies the United States as a free and independent nation.
- People are proud to be a U.S. citizen.
Monroe Doctrine
The United States says this – No European countries in the Western Hemisphere. This is our backyard and we control it.
Characteristics of the North
- The North relies on shipping and foreign trade
- There is some farming but it is not real profitable
- So manufacturing becomes the main industry in the North.
Characteristics of the South
- The South continues to be an agricultural society
- Eli Whitney invents the cotton gin and cotton is produced more efficiently.
- The cotton industry in the South explodes
Cotton Gin and its repercussions
- The South remains an agricultural society
- Slavery increases in the South
- Industry in the North increases due to more cotton as a raw material.
Protective Tariffs

Missouri Compromise
- Congress agrees to admit Maine as a state that has no slavery. Missouri however will allow slavery.
- The rest of the Louisiana Territory will be divided evenly between slave states and free states.
Sectionalism
The country has such a difference in industry and culture, people’s opinions on law and politics are different.
Andrew Jackson’s point of view on Native Americans
- Americans want to settle Western Lands.
- Native Americans are looked upon as a roadblock to the way of great progress.

President Andrew Jackson with congress in 1830 passed the Indian Removal Act.
Importance of the Gold Rush
- The gold rush creates permanent markets in California.
- Trade develops with other Countries
- Industry forms in California
- Shipping, banking, and newspapers are now part of California’s economy.
