What is adolescence?
The period of time when you psychically and emotionally transition from childhood to adulthood.
Has adolescence always been recognized as a unique period of development?
No. Used to have:
infancy - childhood - adulthood
Describe adolescence in the ancient times.
- PLATO AND ARISTOTLE
- the capacity to reason begins to develop
- have limited knowledge and skills
- there was less emphasis on education
Describe adolescence in the 1500s to 1800s.
- capable of work (child labour)
- industrial revolution made this worse (needed more workers to produce faster)
- still no emphasis on education
When was the age of adolescence?
Late 1800’s to early 1900’s

- Child labour laws
- schooling laws
- was recognized as a field of study
Describe the Storm and Stress theory of adolescence (G. Stanley Hall, 1904).
- Mood disruptions (extreme emotions, more depressed mood)
- conflict with parents (challenging the rules)
- risky behaviours (rebellion, drug use, etc)
What are some of the challenged to the storm and stress theory?
- not all teens fit this mold
- it paints adolescents in a negative light while ignoring their strengths
What is the modified storm and stress theory?
- same theory but:
- accounts for individual differences
- recognizes that it is not universal
- still a period of changes
