Why was money a problem at the beginning of elizabeths reign ?
She had inherited a huge amount of debt . She had to work with parlaiment to work out ways to provide income to defend her throne .

France were larger , wealthier , traditional enemy , ally of scotland , mary queen of scots was also half french

- Scotland was an independant country and traditional enemy of england .
- border with scotland was hard to defend and french troops were stationed there

- mary was a catholic monarch who had a strong claim to the english throne

- catholics saw mary as englands legitamate monarch

- spain was a leading catholic power in europe
- they were no longer at war with france so there was a posibility the 2 powers may form an allience against england and its protestant queen

The rebels took durham cathedral and celebrated mass at that cathedral

Many of them fled but many were captured and publicly executed with elizabeth showing no mercy.

Ridolfi , phillip II , duke of alba plan invasion with help of duke of norfolk but cecil intercepted a letter and norfolk was executed
What was the throckmorton plot in 1583 ?
Duke of guise marys cousin , going to invade and overthrow elizabeth . Francis Throckmorton delivered messages to mary and sent responses to spain ( a go-between)

Walsingham uncovered the plot . Papers found at throckmortons house and he was tortured and executed in 1584

Duke of guise would again invade , catholics were encoraged to rebel . Anthony babington wrote to mary about the plot

Walsingham intercepted the letters and deciphered the codes within them . Babington and his accomplases were executed
What type of education did poor boys and girls recieve ?
No formal education . They learned from their family , working on the land or in the home . Thry needed to bring in a wage for the family

-From ages 4-8 they went to petty school (reading writing and arithmetic )
- From ages 8-14 they went grammer school ( latin , greek , french , ancient and classical history , philosophy , archery , wrestling , chess and running )
What type of education do well off girls get ?
- They go to dame schools or are educated at home by their mothers
- in school they learnt ( reading , writing , arithmetic , horse riding , archery , music , dancing , needlework )
What education did upper class boys get ?
- Private tutors until early teens ( latin , greek , french , ancient and classical history )
- university (oxford or cambridge) from 14 or 15 trained by experienced trained lawyers
What education did upper class girls get ?
- private tutor until early teens
- then sent to another noble houshold to complete there education
- make useful social contacts and perfect skills expected of them as noble woman
