EARLY CHILDHOOD PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT Flashcards
Identify trends for height, weight, body fat, and skeletal development during early childhood
*Gains in height & weight slow relative to infancy
*Body fat % →(peaks ~9 months)(decreases until ~5 years)
Skeletal growth→
(Start losing baby teeth)
(Dental health important for permanent teeth)
Identify brain regions that develop significantly during early childhood and their functions
OCCIPITAL LOBE =
(Seeing/hearing)
(visual/auditory cortex)
TEMPORAL LOBE =
(Receptive language areas/speech production)
*Angular Gyrus
*Broca’s Area
FRONTAL LOBE =
(Higher cognitive functions)
(Synaptic pruning happens, especially in Frontal Lobe)
Areas of interest during Early Childhood→
- CORPUS CALLOSUM
- CEREBELLUM
- RETICULAR FORMATION
- PITUITARY GLAND
- HIPPOCAMPUS
CORPUS CALLOSUM…
CONNECTS HEMISPHERES
CEREBELLUM….
MOTOR COORDINATION
RETICULAR FORMATION…
SUSTAINED ATTENTION
PITUITARY GLAND…
RELEASES HORMONES
HIPPOCAMPUS…
MEMORY
BRAIN LATERALIZATION & HANDEDNESS –>
Hand preference develops during early childhood
Ways parents can help picky eaters:
- Increase exposure to healthy foods:
Ex…Give them vegetables more often - Avoid offering bribes:
These bribes cause a greater interest in treat and dislike of the healthy foods
Ex… You bribe the child with ice cream if they eat their vegetables. The child will only eat the vegetables if the ice cream is offered, not because they’re being exposed more often to the food itself. - Get the children involved:
Parents can get their kids to help them cook so they get more excited about the food they’re preparing
Identify the leading cause of death in early childhood:
Unintentional injuries are the leading cause of death b/w 1-44 years of age
Unintentional childhood injuries→
-Children need supervision
-Children DO NOT internalize safety rules until they’re older
