What are the types of referrals are offered?
Self - 5 sessions a year employee, spouse, dependents each
Informal - Work performance isn’t directly affected, supervisor likely aware of some problems, gently reminds the employee of EAP
Supervisory - Work performance is an issue, intended as a corrective action and not discipline.
Management - poor job performance
Critical Incident - debriefing session, 8-72 hours post incident
Can an employee be forced to go to counseling?
No, only exception is Critical incident debriefing. The first time is mandatory, follow up is up to the employee.
Can supervisors suggest EAP to an employee?
Yes, but the supervisor portion is done at the point of mentioning EAP
Can an employee be disciplined for what is said to the EAP counselor?
No, all protected information
Are you allowed to use sick leave to go to EAP on duty?
No, unless a management referral and sick leave use is ok’d by labor relations
How long is each session?
60 minutes
Who is eligible for EAP?
All city employees
Spouses
Dependent kids 18-22 years
What are some signs of a problem drinker on the job?
Reduced production and dependability Decreased reliability Blackouts Unexplained disappearances from a work assignment Attendance problems On the job absenteeism Complaints of physical illness Friction with other employees Odor Change of appearance Money problems
