E3: Prejudice Flashcards
prejudice
hostile or negative attitude towards people in a distinguishable group based solely or patly on their membership to that group
How is prejudice an attitude
Because it has the three necessary components of an attitude: feelings, thoughts, and behaviors
Affective component of prejudice (emotions)
our stereotypes are based on our perception of two different things in people
-warmth
-competence
cognitive component of prejudice (thoughts)
stereotypes: generalization about a group of people in which certain traits are assigned to virtually all members of a group regardless of actual variation among members
Why do we have stereotypes and what is their impact
we have stereotypes because in a complex world, it helps to conserve our cognitive time and energy but the result is that it legitimizes our discrimantory behavior
Behavioral component of prejudice
discrimination: unjustified negative/harmful actions toward a member of a group solely because of their membership to that group
how does prejudice turn into discrimination
the sets of beliefs and emotions we have play a role in our decision making
-especially when someone is scared or angry they are going to rely on their preset notions
explicit prejudice
outward and conscious
implicit prejudice
non conscious and indirect
why are people prejudiced (biology and personality?)
neither biology nor personality fully explain the reason for prejudice.
-people are not born biologically being prejudice
-authoritarian personalities may mean a higher likelihood of being prejudiced, however anyone with any personality type can be prejudiced
