E15 - PROPERTIES OF LIPIDS Flashcards
Biomolecules that are generally insoluble in polar solvents like water but soluble in nonpolar solvents like ETHER, CHLOROFORM, and HEXANE
Lipids
What are the lipids that are found in the biological membranes?
Polar and Amphipathic lipids
Membrane lipids include:
phosphoglycerides
sphingolipids
and cholesterol
The major storage form of energy
triglycerides or fats in adipose tissues
Most abundant among the lipids and components of almost all lipid molecules like waxes, cholesterol esters, sphingolipids, and triglycerides among others
Fatty acids
Amphipathic lipids that could be saturated or unsaturated
Fatty acids
Saturated - abundant in fats
Unsaturated - predominant in plant oils
Apparatus needed:
Test tubes
beaker
graduated cylinder
1mL pipets
droppers
filter papers
Reagents/Materials needed:
Hexane

Qualitative Tests on Lipids:
> Test for solubility
> Translucent spot test
> Sudan IV test
> Test for Unsaturation
> Emulsification of Fats
> Surface tension
In the translucent spot test, how many folds are needed in the filter paper?
