Dyslexia and Alzheimers Flashcards
Dyslexia is associated with
poor or inefficient working memory
Children with dyslexia find it diffcult to hold enough info in wm to be able to blend sounds to form words and find associating letters to sounds problematic therefore
this results in slower reading and writing ability
They have a basic inefficiency in phonological processing and storage so they sound out words more slowly and
so hold fewer words in STM which leads to poor reading skills
One way to help is at school, teachers can
use checklists clearly state lesson aims simplify instructions highlighting or colour coding info using audio or visual materials
There are internet programmes like
Cogmed and Jungle which provide tasks to help improve an individual’s working memory
One weakness of dyslexia treatments is that
each individual case is unique so it is impossible to tailor one programme for all
Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive, degenerative
neurological disorder associated with aging.
Alzheimer’s disease is characterised by
memory loss, concentration loss, confusion, and mood swings that progressively become worse
Dementia initially deteriorates the memory system for new events and information whereas
older info is preserved and it also affects wm
Ways to support someone with Alzheimers
Write reminders, keep routine, exercise, photos, patience, small puzzles, go to familiar places
